Happy Halloween!

Welcome back to our favorite spooky, time of year-The Halloween Season!  Time to put on a fun costume, pop over to the neighbor’s house for some free candy and enjoy all the Halloween decorations along the way!  This holiday can be a great way to sprinkle in a few social skills such as brief eye contact, saying Trick-or-Treat, or replying thank you for the piece of candy.  (Remember, these skills are at your discretion and what you believe is appropriate for your child!

Autism Halloween

Holidays should be fun, memory-making times with family.  We have to be mindful to avoid sensory overload for kids with autism (ie-scratchy costumes, flashing lights, scary sounds)  so that the focus stays on fun.

No elaborate costume needed to have fun. Just find costume ideas made for comfort, ease, simplicity, and low stress and grab your treat bucket.

Simple costumes with low sensory input and a lot of enjoyment are perfect for the occasion.

Need a little practice before the big night?  Try watching a couple of videos of kids trick or treating, or how about a test run with family.   Gather some glow sticks, small toys, food treats and your child’s favorite candy and have a mini dress rehearsal of trick or treating.  This is a great way to ease anxiety and practice.  The important thing is to have fun!

Face Painting

Face painting can be fun and as elaborate or simple as your child would like.

This is a good option for kids who don’t want to wear different clothes for a costume.  Why not wear one solid color shirt and pants and add face paint?

Don’t worry you don’t have to be an artist either!  A simple pumpkin or ghost on the cheek is adorable!
